The Shooting I Witnessed

I've had a few people on a news website question my motives about this blog so let me get right to it. I have witnessed police brutality firsthand, not only in my life, but I also witnessed an unarmed man get riddled with bullets by three cops. This didn't take place in Seattle, but does that really matter anyways? Most people will never have to witness something like this in their lives. Once you do witness something so traumatic, it will change you as a person. Here's a link to the actual shooting:

On January 12, 2010 I was traveling down PCH in Laguna Beach about 8 in the morning to go get a cup of coffee. I had my iPhone and was listening to some music so I couldn't hear what was going on but all of a sudden traffic came to a halt. From my viewpoint I could see a few cars pulled over to the side of the road and people were standing around their cars. It was kind of foggy that morning so I just assumed there was some kind of minor fender-bender, I really wasn't paying much attention. I didn't see any cars that looked too damaged. After a couple of minutes I see a bunch of people look across the highway and then everybody starting hitting the ground. I pulled out my headphones and I immediately heard several rounds of gunfire and people were yelling for everyone to get down.
Moments after the shooting

After about 30 seconds the gunfire stopped so I decided to see what was going on. I remember thinking to myself, "How the fuck does a car accident turn into a shooting?" As I looked across PCH I could see 3 officers with their guns drawn still surrounding a car that was very damaged from what looked like a really bad accident. Then the cops started shooting into the car again. Maybe another 8 rounds. I don't know. As soon as the shooting stopped I crossed the street, not even really paying attention to the fact I was walking right into a crime scene. The cops taped off the street but I was still standing about 15 feet from the car as the fire department attempted to pull the man out of his car. After about 10 minutes they finally got the man out of his car and onto a stretcher. People surrounding the scene were yelling things like "Die motherfucker!."
Trying to get their stories straight?

Remarkably, the cops let me and some other bystanders stay were we were standing for another hour. The car was riddled with bullets. I could count at least 10 bullet holes just in the door and the back of the car. The car itself was severely damaged from the previous wreck. As you can see from the pictures I took that right after the shooting, the car is pretty much disabled. According to witness accounts, the man was driving 100mph down PCH in the wrong lane of traffic and caused a major accident involving several vehicles. When bystanders and fire fighters tried to help the man he somehow was able to start his car and attempted to flee the scene. That's when officers that just arrived on scene started shooting. As you can see from my pictures, there was nowhere for him to go. His car was totaled. He was blocked in on a small side street.

What concerns me most about this shooting was all the bystanders that were standing on the sidewalk when this went down. Amazingly, nobody was hit by stray bullets. Now that I know that the man was unarmed even makes this shooting more unjustified. In the end all three officers were cleared. As far as I know, a lawsuit by the man's family is pending. Colby Koenig was just 25 years old. He died later that evening. Nobody will ever know why he did what he did. By all accounts he was a good kid. He didn't have a criminal record.

I'm not justifying what Colby did to cause this accident. The reasons he tried to flee are unclear. Sometimes people do strange things after a major accident. I'm sure he suffered severe head trauma by the looks of the damage to the car. Maybe he was trying to get away from the cops. I never have said what he did wasn't wrong. He endangered a lot of lives that day. But did he deserve to be shot like that? I don't think he did. This kid had a family and friends. Whatever was going on with him, he could have got some help. He will never have that chance now.

For weeks after the shooting I had constant nightmares. I would get panic attacks. Only if you witnessed something like this would you understand. I was also very scared of the police. I was standing in line in a Subway about a month later and a cop walked in and I started sweating and shaking. I felt nauseous. Even months later, on the 4th of July, I got pulled over because my headlight was out and I was scared out of my mind. This incident caused me to move away from Laguna Beach. I knew I had to get away. I ended up moving here to Boston. I loved Laguna. It's one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's a laid-back little hippy town on the ocean. But I will never forget that day.

I don't live in Seattle anymore. But I was born and raised there. Most of my family still lives there. I take interest in the news and what's going on in the area. I read the local news daily. Hardly a week goes by that I don't read about an officer-involved shooting in the area or about some cop that beat someone up. It's sickening. People do crazy things everywhere but I have never heard of so many people getting killed by cops.

This is why I get so upset when I hear about another police shooting in Seattle. Everyday I hope and pray someone from my family doesn't get hurt or killed. I don't care what anyone thinks. Most assholes that are pro-law enforcement have never even come close to seeing someone get shot by the police. So to all the people that complain about my blog or my posts on the web, SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Officer Birk is Walking

Well, I predicted it. Officer Birk is not going to be charged with murder for shooting John T. Williams. He won't be charged with any crime. Even though I knew this would be the result of the investigation I am still stunned. No ordinary citizen would get away with this. This only proves that if you are a cop, you are truly above the law. This sends a bad message to everyone in Seattle. It also sends the message to police officers everywhere that no matter what, you will not be held accountable for your actions.

Local cops must be licking their chops. If Birk can away with this then any cop can pretty much get away with anything. How much worse does it have to get before an officer goes to prison for his actions? The SPD has made its final determination that the shooting was indeed unjustified. What does this mean for Birk? He could be disciplined or fired. Are you fucking kidding me? The fact that there is even a remote chance this man could ever be a police officer again is fucking outrageous.

What is it going to take for citizens to say enough is enough? When are we going to start defending our own? You can't fight fire with fire in this case. We can't go around shooting back. That wouldn't help anyone and we would be just as bad as those assholes. We need to voice our outrage and take action when these fools that make these decisions are up for re-election. We need to send a strong message that this kind of behavior isn't right. It's going to take everybody to get on board and fight this. You need to take back your city. Seattle isn't safe anymore.

Officer Birk, you may not be going to prison but you are still a fucking coward. I know it and you know it. I hope you feel real tough knowing you shot a homeless, deaf guy in the side four times. You must feel like a man now. I wish you all the worst life has to offer.

Just to Clarify...

In my last post I stated some startling facts. That's all these are, just facts. These aren't opinions. There have been a lot of officer-involved shootings in the Seattle area the past five or six years. I'm not here to say whether or not any of these were justified shootings or not. There are a few that stand out that I have very strong feelings about and I will write a lot about them, but if I were to sit here and say that all these shootings were unjustified I would be a complete idiot. There are obvious cases here where the police had no choice but to shoot. I think we can all agree that Maurice Clemmons deserved what he got in many ways. The man gunned down four officers who were sitting in a coffee shop.

What concerns me most is the sheer numbers. Seattle is a medium sized city. The area is growing but in a lot of ways it is still very rural. Drive almost any direction and in twenty minutes and you are in the woods. Seattle's crime-rate is low. Sure, property crime is a little high due to the influx of drug-use in the region, but overall Seattle is a safe city to live in. Unlike most major cities, Seattle really doesn't have a bad area. You could argue that the Rainier Valley is pretty bad, but if that's what Seattle's projects look like, then Seattle is doing pretty well. I wouldn't recommend you go walking in Rainier Beach at night by yourself but if you had to, you would probably be ok. I can't say that for parts of Boston, LA, Chicago, Dallas, New York, ect.

The big question is why are there so many officer-involved shootings? Everyone should be asking themselves this. Is it the economy? Well, it's tough everywhere right now. I live in a city that has a lot of crime. A lot more than Seattle. But I rarely ever read about an officer-involved shooting. It does happen, but not even close to the rate it's happening in Seattle. I can't speak for other major cities because I don't live in them, but I can say Boston cops aren't nearly as aggressive as Seattle cops. Cops here don't stop you for jaywalking, not wearing a seat belt, talking on your cellphone while driving, ect. I have never seen it.

In Seattle you can be stopped for anything at anytime. This has happened to me several times. I have been approached by officers just walking down the sidewalk and minding my own business. They have stopped me,  interrogated me, searched me, made me feel like a criminal, all for NO REASON. No probable cause. A few times they made up something about looking for someone that "matched my description" but other times they gave me no reason. Sure, I could be non-compliant and give them a hard time and ask them if they have a right to search me blah, blah blah. But I would only be making my problems worse. Regardless, it's something I don't see here in Boston.

It just makes me wonder. If cops weren't so aggressive maybe a simple jaywalking incident wouldn't turn into someone getting killed. That should never happen. But look, if you point a gun at an officer, you made your own bed at that point. Someone pulling a garden hose on an officer though? I have a real issue that a trained officer can't tell the difference between a garden hose and a real gun. This is what is happening all over Western Washington. Why the numbers are up I couldn't tell you. But there has to be a reason for this spike. That's what we all have to figure out. I don't think anyone can prevent an idiot with a death wish from pointing a gun at a cop. But I'm sure a lot of these shootings didn't need to happen.

One thing is for sure. The more aggressive cops become, the more scared criminals become and that doesn't bode well for anybody. If cops continue to disrespect everyone they will be putting themselves in danger by making the criminals more aggressive towards police. I'm all for stopping crime. But there is a right way to do it. There is a way to treat the suspect with respect while still doing your job safely. I don't think cops in Seattle understand that too well.

Dark Cloud Hangs Over Seattle

The shooting of the Woodcarver isn't the first shooting in and around Seattle. It was just the latest at the time. In fact, just that week alone 6 other men were killed by police in the Seattle area. Yes, that makes 7 men killed by police in 7 separate incidents, in one week! This doesn't even include the property owner that was killed in Spokane that same week.

Maybe you think this was just an anomaly. If that doesn't shock you, maybe this will. Since January 2009 until now there have been 44 separate incidents in and around the Seattle area. I am talking about in the Seattle Metropoitan area which includes Snohomish, King, and Peirce counties. I have also included parts of Kitsap county since it is right across the water from Seattle and is considered part of the Seattle community.

Here's the list of Shame:

Something Isn't Right Here...

This past summer everything came to a head in Seattle when a homeless, deaf, intoxicated, Indian woodcarver was shot and killed in downtown Seattle. He wasn't shot by a criminal. He was shot and killed by a cop. Why the cop shot him is debatable, but this man was shot at least four times. Police video shows that the officer shot John T. Williams seven seconds after he was approached by the officer. John T. Williams hardly had a chance. The officer states that Williams turned and threatened him with the knife. Officer Birk states that Williams lunged at him even though several witnesses say Williams was walking away.

The knife was found in a closed position even though Birk stated the knife was open. Williams was shot in the side and the back. This isn't looking too good for Officer Birk. Let's give Birk the benefit of the doubt for one moment though. Let's say Williams did turn toward Birk and point the knife in his direction. The fact that this officer couldn't figure out a way to handle an intoxicated, 50 year-old man that had visible disabilities is scary. Don't forget, Birk shot Williams from 10 feet away. Williams was holding a 3-inch wood carving knife that may have been closed. Four bullets to the side and back! Unbelievable.

What Ever Happened to That Guy?

Do you remember when you were a kid and this guy used to come to your school to talk to you about the dangers of doing drugs, talking to strangers, and sticking metal objects into electrical outlets? He called himself "Officer Friendly" and friendly he was. He wasn't quite as cool as the fire department when they would show up at your school, only because they would let you ride in their rig, but he was still cool. I think every boy growing up wanted to be a cop someday. I know I did, that is until I started seeing the dark side of the law.

These days officers aren't so friendly. Most of them are outright bullies. A lot of them do 'roids. A lot of them just got back from the Gulf and suffer from extreme PTSD. Some of them got beat up in high school and now are using their job to pay back society. Whatever the case, cops stick together. They lie for one another. They almost always have each others' back and not just when it comes to their safety on the job. If a cop breaks the law they are covered in many ways. It's extremely rare for a cop to be charged with anything let alone murder.

Now I'm not going to sit here and say all cops are bad people. That would be like saying all blacks are thieves, all Asians are bad drivers, all politicians lie. That simply isn't true... wait, all politicians do lie. Never mind. But you get my point. There are bad and good people of all races and groups. There are people that should have chosen a different career. There are people that just shouldn't be working in customer service for example. They suck at their job. The difference here is if you have chosen to become a cop and you suck at your job, that could cost people their lives. And it has.

I'm not even sure Officer Friendly exists anymore. Most people have a bad impression of the police. There are a few people that put the police up on this pedestal. What makes this kind of person so dangerous is the police can do no wrong in their eyes. They will back the police no matter what goes down. You could never convince them that sometimes police lie. Sometimes they themselves commit crimes. Sometimes they take advantage of their power and do really bad things.

Being a cop is a tough job, I am sure of that. There's a lot of pressure. You have to deal with the worst of the worst on a daily basis. Your put your own safety and health on the line every day. The stress has to be extreme. I'm not even sure I would want to be a cop anymore. The toll it must take on your mind, body, and spirit. This job isn't for everyone. But there are men and women out there with badges and guns that have no business being a cop. A lot of them. This is who we should be afraid of.

Some will say, "If you are not a criminal, you have nothing to worry about." I say you are wrong! You could have no criminal record what-so-ever and one incident could change your life forever. It's happened. It's not always the criminals that are brutalized. Normal, everyday, family men (and women) are harassed by the cops every single day. If it hasn't happened to you, good for you. You are lucky. But it's happened to me. It's happened to people in my family. It's happened to some of my friends. And most of us are white middle-class Americans! I can't even imagine what it's like to be an African American man in this country dealing with the police. All it takes is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Officer Friendly doesn't exist anymore and even if he does in some classroom out there, it's only a PR stunt at this point. There is a disconnect between the police and the communities they serve. It's no wonder people trust the police less and less these days. This blog is not a blog to bash the police. It is only here to open peoples' eyes. If you are pro-police and have some compelling, intelligent things to say I welcome your comments. If you come here just to bash me, insult me, and talk out of your ass, you've come to the wrong place. I can only hope this blog grows and gets people talking. I hope that it inspires change, because right now the system is broken beyond belief and nobody is doing anything about it.
